A $20 million lawsuit has been filed against a Canadian doctor for allegedly exposing patients to HIV as well as hepatitis B and C, the Toronto Star reports. The firm Merchant Law Group filed the lawsuit on behalf of two Ottawa residents, Jean-Francois Farjon and Rebecca Soroka, who were patients in the Ottawa clinic of Christiane Farazli, MD. In October, Ottawa public health officials warned more than 6,500 patients that they may have been exposed to viral infection. Later, an inspection revealed that Farazli’s clinic did not follow procedures for sanitizing gastroscopy and colonoscopy equipment during a nine-year period. The plaintiffs in the case are seeking $20 million in general and special damages.
