PEPFAR Saved $323M Using Generic HIV Drugs

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) saved slightly more than $323 million from 2005 to 2008 by using generic HIV drugs to treat people living with the virus, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to a PEPFAR statement, these savings contributed to improved access for adults and children living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and other regions. It also allowed many PEPFAR-supported programs to invest funds in training health care workers and expanding direct services.
