U.S. and European Philanthropic AIDS Funding in Decline

Total funding for HIV/AIDS from U.S. and European donors has decreased 2 percent, according to a study from the European HIV/AIDS Funders Group and Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) and supported by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). According to a UNAIDS statement, the total given by U.S.-based philanthropies in 2009 was $585 million, a 5 percent reduction from the previous year and the first decrease on record since the FCAA began tracking donations. Projections for 2010 show that U.S.-based donations will only continue the downward trend, with 33 percent of philanthropists forecasting decreases in donations.
