The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a lawsuit by an HIV-positive pilot who is suing the federal government for damages over losing his license to fly, National Public Radio (NPR) reports. Stanmore Cooper is suing for emotional distress caused by the government’s violation of the Privacy Act. The government admits it violated the act when the Social Security Administration passed along his HIV status to the Federal Aviation Administration. However, the government claims that damages can only be assessed for economic harm, not emotional harm.
