Science Names HIV Microbicide, PrEP to Its Top 10 List

Science magazine included two HIV/AIDS medical advances in its top 10 list of achievements for 2010, according to a USAID statement. One of the breakthroughs was a study showing that a microbicide can effectively and safely reduce HIV transmission in women. Ninety percent of that study was funded by USAID as part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The other breakthrough was the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Initiative (iPrEx) study, which showed that taking a daily antiretroviral pill reduced HIV risk by 44 percent among men who have sex with men. USAID is planning to build on the iPrEx results with FemPrEP, a similar study for women.
