PreventionWorks Needle Exchange Group in DC to Close
PreventionWorks, the leading needle exchange group in Washington, DC, will close February 25, The Washington Post reports. Diminishing private contributions, city budget cuts and delays in funding, as well as turnover of top officials, all contributed to the decision to close. Although needle exchange is controversial in the nation’s capital, PreventionWorks has been distributing clean needles to drug users for 12 years, providing about 100,000 sterile syringes to 2,200 people in 2010 alone.
