Stigma Makes NC AIDS Group Change Its Name
A North Carolina AIDS group, the Rowan County AIDS Task
Force, has changed its name to the Rowan Care Alliance because of stigma, the
Salisbury Post reports. The organization provides care and services for people with
HIV/AIDS and their families, mostly through case management. A client of the
organization said that many people with HIV stay away from getting help because
everyone in the small community knows each other and individuals are
embarrassed to come forward. Advocates say that the new name will be welcoming
and non-threatening and will encourage individuals to get tested.
