The Kid, a sequel to the bestselling book Push, has been published, USA Today reports. The 2009 Academy Award–winning movie Precious was adapted from Push, the 1997 debut novel by Sapphire. The Kid follows the life of Abdul, the son of Claireece Precious Jones, the HIV-positive main character in Push. The sequel begins at Precious’s funeral. Sapphire killed off Precious as a reflection of the realities of the 1980s. “Poor African-American women were 10 times more likely to die from AIDS than were upper-class white gay men,” Sapphire said. “People like Precious didn’t get the help they needed.”
