HIV-Positive South Africans on ARVs Defy Risky Sex Expectations

HIV-positive people on meds in South Africa aren't having as much risky, unsafe sex as expected, PlusNews reports. In a South African study of 2,332 HIV-positive patients, participants reported less sexual activity after starting antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. They also were less likely to report having unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners. If these findings are confirmed by further studies, this is good news for a proposed HIV prevention strategy called "Universal Test and Treat." This would test an entire local populace and put everyone who tests positive on treatment, which reduces—but does not eliminate—viral load and transmission risk. Increased unprotected sexual activity would undermine the strategy's effectiveness.
