Scientists in Japan have found a strain of gonorrhea that is resistant to all recommended antibiotics, Reuters reports. So far, no treatments have been able to kill the new strain, called H041, and doctors say that the bacterium could turn into a public health threat. Gonorrhea—which is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the world and is most prevalent in south and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan African countries—can lead to ectopic pregnancy and infertility among women. Doctors are now experimenting with treating the STI with two or more antibiotics at once.
