Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa Faces Closure

Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), an HIV/AIDS activist organization in South Africa, may shut down in January 2012 due to lack of funds, the Mail & Guardian reports. TAC, which receives most of its funding from a five-year grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, failed to receive a 6.5 million rand ($760,000) payment in July; a TAC statement blames South Africa's Department of Health for the delay. If the money isn't received by the first week in January, TAC will have to close its doors at the end of the month. Last month, the Global Fund announced it would make no new grants for funding until 2014. The fund accounts for a quarter of all international financing to fight AIDS, TB and malaria.
