The number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the United States has hit an all-time low, with only 11,181 cases reported in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and reported by the Los Angeles Times. Four states—California, Texas, New York and Florida—accounted for nearly half of all TB cases, with the rates among Latinos, African Americans and Asians, seven, eight and 25 times as high as among whites. Progress in eradicating the disease has stalled. In 2009, TB cases dropped by almost 12 percent, and public health officials had hoped to end TB in the United States by 2010. Worldwide, TB is the leading cause of death for people with HIV/AIDS.
