AIDS Activist Claims Men Beat Her for Not Putting on Veil

Eva Andrew, a Western AIDS activist working in Tanzania, was allegedly beaten by a group of men at a Zanzibar public market for leaving her head uncovered during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, AllAfrica.com reports. The young woman was employed by a nongovernmental organization and was at the market to survey the products sold by the organization’s clients. Army officers who happened to be nearby reportedly helped bring the incident to a halt.
