A local school board in Tennessee has made revisions to its book policy after a parent complained about an AIDS memoir being available in a middle school library, The Tennessean reports. A book containing selections from Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir by Paul Monette was available at the library in the Cheatham Middle School. The school director had the book removed until the committee could view the material. After the committee reviewed the book, it was taken out of general circulation and placed in a restricted area at the library. The revised policy states the school director may request a book be removed from general circulation on an emergency basis until reviewed by a committee. At least one board members feels this policy revision could be viewed as trampling on people’s First Amendment rights and could therefore invite lawsuits.
