Film About Positive Kids Prevents HIV in Thailand

by Cristina González

Thailand, Baan GerdaNorth of Bangkok, Baan Gerda is the only facility in Thailand that fosters and cares for children living with HIV. The center is the focus of a new documentary, Living With the Tiger, which follows children as they travel to their hometowns, trying to reintegrate into their communities and find acceptance. The film is being shown at schools and universities across Thailand to educate other young people about the virus, and there’s hope of a U.S. tour soon. It’s a provocative window into the pain of stigma—and how we rise above it.

I have watched this Movie and loved every moment of it. Though one would expect it to be rather sad given the topic, the opposite is true. It is very moving and one experiences both joy and sadness during the movie. The kids deserve medals for enduring such hardship in their lives but they are wonderfully happy kids and Baan Gerda does a fantastic job helping them overcome earlier hardship, rejection and growing up with this disease through no fault of their own. I hope everyone gets to see it!!
