Report Finds Subpar Health Care, High HIV Rates for Transgender People
Transgender and gender-nonconforming people face discrimination by health care providers, high rates of HIV and little to no access to care, according to a report released by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Researchers found that 19 percent of people were refused care because they were transgender, 28 percent were harassed in medical settings, and that transgender respondents reported four times the national average of HIV infection. The report also included public policy recommendations like increasing research that focuses specifically on the transgender population and offering new training for medical professionals.
