The high-level meeting, held as needed, is designed to provide Ban Ki-Moon, secretary general of the United Nations, with a global update on the state of the pandemic. At the end of the meeting, a proclamation is released highlighting new goals based on the updates. Two of this year’s key goals were “no children born with HIV by 2015” and “15 million people in care by 2015.” While some criticized the language and stipulations of the proclamation, we just wondered: Who’s gonna pay for all those pills? Especially when many pharmaceutical companies that manufacture HIV treatment refuse to join international patent pools or provide affordable pricing in low- and middle-income countries.
