Imprisoned Uzbek HIV/AIDS activist Maksim Popov has been released early from a seven-year sentence, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFERL) reports. Popov, former leader of Izis—a nongovernmental organization in Uzbekistan dedicated to HIV prevention—was jailed in 2009 for distributing a book he’d written on preventing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Several international organizations had advocated for his release. He is currently under house arrest. He was released in June, but his release only became known recently.
