Doug Waller, a Seattle-area firefighter who died four years ago of HIV-related causes, is now being honored as having died in the line of duty. Family and friends remembered him at a ceremony on Sunday, October 31, Federal Way Mirror reports. The International Association of Firefighters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, inscribed Waller’s name onto its Fallen Firefighter Memorial in September. The recognition had been delayed because there was initial controversy whether Waller contracted the virus on the job. It is now believed that Waller got HIV from a needle prick on a medical call while on duty.
