April 25 is World Malaria Day, a global awareness day for efforts to control malaria. The theme for 2011 is “Achieving Progress and Impact.” Close to 800,000 people get malaria each year, most of them children ages 5 and younger. Combined, HIV and malaria can be especially dangerous, as each disease fuels the other. HIV weakens the immune system’s ability to fight off malaria, while malaria increases HIV viral load.
