FDA Approves Earlier Detection HIV Test by Abbott
The U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an HIV test made by Abbott that can
detect the virus days earlier than antibody-only HIV tests, according to an
Abbott statement. Abbott’s Architect HIV Ag/Ab Combo assay can detect both HIV
antibodies (developed by the immune system days after infection) and HIV
antigen (a protein produced by the virus immediately after infection). This
test is the first of its kind approved for use in the United States.
