Nearly 30 members of ACT UP New York and their allies celebrated the opening of a New York Public Library (NYPL) exhibition on AIDS activism with a “Die-In” demonstration to raise awareness about present-day HIV issues. The NYPL exhibit titled Why We Fight: Remembering AIDS Activism showcases posters, pamphlets and artifacts from the 1980s and ’90s. ACT UP members said they were supportive of the library’s effort to honor the history of AIDS advocacy, but held a protest on the floor of Astor Hall and on the library steps to make the collective statement that “AIDS Is Not History” and should not be memorialized as if it were.
