New Technologies May Increase Adherence to HIV Drugs

New technologies may help HIV-positive people adhere to their pill regimens, The Minnesota Daily reports. Keith Horvath, a University of Minnesota researcher, built a “Facebook-like” website last spring that allowed participants to network with other people with HIV. Creating a social support network can help fight depression, drug use and other factors that derail a person’s regimen. Horvath is preparing to submit a grant proposal to the National Instiutes of Health for a larger study. Elsewhere, other high-tech alternatives—such as pillboxes with build-in alarms—are offered in the state. And Positive Link, part of the Minnesota AIDS Project, has a “secret” Facebook page for HIV-positive gay and bisexual men that is unsearchable and whose announcements can’t be viewed by non-members.
