South African Leaders Intensify AIDS Fight

At the 4th National Congress of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) in South Africa on March 16, the country’s Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka encouraged families to become more involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, South African news service IOL News reports (iol.co.za, 3/17).

“We need to utilize the family more significantly in preventing infections and isolation of those infected and affected, as well as in fighting the stigma of HIV,” Mlambo-Ngcuka said at the meeting.

Also at the meeting, newly elected TAC chairperson Nonkosi Khumalo spoke about violence against women and children in South Africa, and the fact that the country is falling behind on antiretroviral treatment targets. “South Africa is behind on implementing its plans and activities.... About 350,000 people are on ARV treatment, but this is still far behind the target of 530,000 by the end of 2008,” said Khumalo. “Most worrying is the absence of a coherent approach to HIV prevention, and high rates of infection. These problems are worsening the crisis...”
