Africa’s intellectual elite is urging Bono and other American and European activists to stop showering the AIDS-ravaged continent with assistance and invest in local projects instead. At a recent meeting of Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) in Arusha, Tanzania, leaders discussed ways to strengthen the African economy without depending on foreign help.

the virus has impacted her life. She currently supervises a biannual HIV/AIDS awareness week as
the director of the student health center at Pierce College, a
community commuter school in Woodland Hills, California.
