African First Ladies Discuss Women and HIV

On April 20, the first ladies from 15 African nations will meet with business leaders, health policy experts and Hollywood stars in Los Angeles to discuss their work in addressing HIV/AIDS, poverty and other concerns among women and girls in their respective countries, Reuters reports.

“These are some of Africa’s most important leaders, and aiding their efforts is critical to improving health throughout Africa,” said Ted Alemayhu, founder of the Los Angeles–based U.S. Doctors for Africa (USDFA), a nonprofit that organized the event alongside African Synergy Against AIDS, an African group founded in 2002 by 22 first ladies from the continent.

The summit brings together the first ladies of Angola, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia, Swaziland and several other African countries to meet with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver, and Sarah Brown—wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown—among others. The summit is hosted by film stars Danny Glover, Billy Zane and POZ cover girl Sharon Stone.
