Hundreds Rally for Sub-Saharan Positive Women
In a February 4 rally, hundreds gathered in the sub-Saharan African nation of Burkina Faso to protest abuse directed at women living with HIV/AIDS, Agence France-Presse/Yahoo News reports (news.yahoo.com, 2/4).
The rally—attended by 500 women from 30 sub-Saharan African countries—marked the beginning of a four-day conference in Burkina Faso. It was organized by the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA), in collaboration with UNAIDS, the Burkina Faso government, local activists and AIDS service organizations in the region.
“There is no doubt that lots of human rights violations characterize the [HIV/AIDS] pandemic, SWAA president Bernice Heloo says in the article. “Many women have been driven from their marital homes, stripped of their hard-earned possessions and separated from their children and people they love.”
