South African Farm Workers at Risk
According to an HIV prevalence survey commissioned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), farm workers in South Africa’s Limpopo Province are at high risk for HIV infection, African news site APO Source reports (appablog.wordpress.com, 4/4).
The survey—co-commissioned by the Hoedspruit Training Trust (HTT)—revealed that of the 1,500 farmers interviewed, 28.5 percent were living with HIV. The survey also found that women were disproportionately affected, with an HIV prevalence rate of 32.5 percent, compared with 20.9 percent in men.
APO Source reports that women farmers aged 18 to 24 were three times more likely to be HIV positive than their male counterparts.
