Report: Audit Wealthier Nations’ Response to AIDS

A report from Swedish-based foundation AIDS Accountability International (AAI) states that wealthier nations such as the United States are “worse at monitoring and/or reporting on the fundamentals of their epidemics and their responses” than poorer countries, reports the Financial Times.

The AAI report states that richer countries are more successful in providing lifesaving treatment to their HIV-positive citizens. However, they do not meet the same standards that they place on countries that receive AIDS funding from them.

AAI’s analysis is the first to track whether countries are honoring their HIV/AIDS commitments made to the United Nations in both 2001 and 2006. By tracking the countries, the AAI argues, it will be able to hold each country accountable for its actions or lack thereof.

To address the deficiencies, AAI suggests auditing governments to make sure that data they provide can be independently validated.
