India: Group Calls for Increased Support for Children Affected by HIV
In anticipation of World AIDS Orphans Day, recognized May 7, a media awareness program in India called for increased attention to the rights of those children in Manipur, a state in India, the Imphal Free Press reports. The program was sponsored by Manipur’s branch of the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud, a global nonprofit that advocates for children affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty.
According to the article, Keisham Pradip Kumar, member secretary of the Child Welfare Committee in Imphal East, emphasized that it is government’s job to ensure that children are properly protected and that their right to live a healthy life is not compromised. In addition, Sapam Dilip, a journalist with the All India Reporter, mentioned that the media could help spread awareness by covering the issue of orphaned children living with the virus, but he cautioned the media to use appropriate terminology.
