Federal Judge Allows Alabama HIV Inmate Segregation Trial
Under a federal judge’s order, a lawsuit to end the segregation of HIV-positive prisoners in Alabama jails will begin on Monday, September 17, The Associated Press reports. The state prison had requested a dismissal of the suit, which was filed by eight inmates with HIV who want to be housed with HIV-negative prisoners. Six states segregated prisoners by HIV status, but only Alabama and South Carolina continue with this policy.
