Nearly $1M in amfAR Grants to Five HIV Cure Research Teams

A new round of grants totaling more than $913,000 will support five teams of cure research scientists in the United States and Chile, according to a statement by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, which awarded the grants through its Research Consortium on HIV Eradication (ARCHE) program. Two teams are from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, with one collaborating with Tulane Primate Center in Covington, Louisiana. The others are from University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill collaborating with Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC; from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, collaborating with both Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Clinica Santa Maria in Santiago, Chile; and from Massachusetts General Hospital, also in Cambridge.

And this is why I have donated $25 each month to AmFAR since 1994. They fill the gap in research where funding is lacking from other sources. But certainly $1 million is a far cry from the amount that should be directed toward finding a cure. How about the major HIV drug companies (who are receiving $2000 a month from me and my insurance company) allocate a portion of that income towards research for a cure?
