A grant of $20 million by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research will help establish the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research at a yet-to-be-announced academic research facility, according to an amfAR press release.

This is just part of amfAR’s $100 million investment strategy to develop the scientific basis of a cure by 2020, which is the goal of amfAR’s “Countdown to a Cure for AIDS” initiative. Research will focus on better understanding how to eradicate the so-called reservoirs of latent HIV that hide in the body.

As part of its cure strategy, amfAR will also award a total of $80 million in research grants for the following five categories:

Innovation Grants to test new ideas supported by preliminary data

Impact Grants to develop established ideas that show potential for achieving a cure

Investment Grants to recruit researchers and scientists from outside the field of HIV

Opportunity Fund to help amfAR respond quickly to unforeseen and emerging research opportunities

ARCHE—the amfAR Research Consortium on HIV Eradication—to support collaborative teams of scientists both in the United States and globally to work on a cure
