amfAR Gives $900K to Six Young HIV/AIDS Researchers

The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) has announced its seventh round of Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research, according to an amfAR statement. Named in honor of amfAR’s founding chair, the fellowships support the work of young HIV/AIDS researchers. Six fellows will each receive about $150,000. The new Krim fellows are Rafael Cubas, PhD, of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute Florida; Dario Dilernia, PhD, of Emory University in Atlanta; Nuria Izquierdo-Useros, PhD, of the AIDS Research Institute IrsiCaixa in Spain; Kashif Sadiq, PhD, of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain; Damien Tully, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital; and Angela Wahl, PhD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They are studying immune cells and the immune system; new ways to attack latent HIV reservoirs and activate the HIV protease enzyme; and transmission through mucosal membranes and breast milk.
