Andy Fraser, the HIV-positive openly gay bassist of the rock band Free, died at age 62 after a battle with cancer and AIDS, according to the BBC and the blog Joe.My.God.

The London-born Fraser founded the band when he was 15 and wrote most of its material, including the 1970 hit “All Right Now.”

An official statement regarding his death said, “Andy was a strong social activist and defender of individual human rights.” And in a 2005 interview, he said that his greatest achievement was “coming to terms with being gay—not only personally, but publicly. Being able to share that with my daughters, which has enabled the most open, loving relationship imaginable.”
