City Council Settles $250,000 HIV Suit Against Atlanta Police
A Georgia man who alleges he was denied employment by the Atlanta Police Department as a police officer because he has HIV and who then sued the city will receive a $250,000 settlement from the City Council, The Georgia Voice reports. Richard Roe, the pseudonym used by the plaintiff, first applied for the job in 2006. Lawyers for the city first claimed Atlanta did not have a policy against hiring police officers with HIV, then they claimed that his status presented a “direct threat” to others.
