Baltimore Tackles Its High Infection Rate
The Baltimore metropolitan area has the second-highest rate of AIDS cases in the United States, after Miami, city health officials report. On Wednesday, October 3, Baltimore business, arts and civic leaders met to plot a strategy for reducing HIV/AIDS rates. They announced that the city would be teaming with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase awareness.
Nearly 16,000 people were living with HIV or AIDS in Baltimore at the end of 2006, health officials added.
"We have a serious problem in Baltimore," added Mayor Sheila Dixon. "It is a crucial issue that we have to stay focused on."
