U.S. Representative Barbara Lee (D–Calif.) and U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, MD (R–Okla.), as well as 38 additional lawmakers, sent President Obama a letter urging him to double the amount of people receiving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), according to a Lee statement. They seek to increase the 6 million people getting ARVs from PEPFAR to 12 million by the end of fiscal year 2016. They want this goal to be affirmed during the replenishment meeting in Washington, DC, this December of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
