Benefits Counseling, a Phone Call Away

Earlier this month, the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago (ALCC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health launched a statewide toll-free hotline for HIV-positive people in need of public benefits counseling. The Chicago Free Press (chicagofreepress.com, 2/6) reports that HIV-positive individuals and their case managers can use the hotline to connect with ALCC legal staff to discuss topics such as benefits and public and private health care options.

“Our new toll-free number fills a critical gap in our health care system,” said ALCC Executive Director Ann Hilton Fisher. “Illinois has worked hard to create a safety net for people with HIV, but the complexities of qualifying for the various programs can be daunting for many.”

The ALCC hotline is 866.506.3038, available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
