Mayor De Blasio Kicks Off AIDS Walk New York

On May 18, AIDS Walk New York drew a crowd of 30,000 walkers to Central Park and raised over $5 million for the fight against HIV/AIDS. Every year the walk benefits GMHC and over 40 other AIDS service organizations within the tri-state area. In total, the event, which marked its 29th year, has raised more than $132 million.

Corporate sponsors, teams and individual walkers came together to make this year another huge success. A major draw came from Bill de Blasio, one of the few NYC mayors to attend the AIDS Walk and address the crowd. In his comments, he emphasized the city’s goal to stop new HIV infections.

Many celebrities joined the cause and the ceremony as well including: six-time Emmy winner Tyne Daly, her co-star Bobby Steggert and four-time Tony Award–winning playwright Terrance McNally (all of Broadway’s AIDS-related play Mothers and Sons); Randy Fenoli (host of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress); Dot-Marie Jones (Glee); and Eric Olsen and Daniela Ruah (both of NCIS: Los Angeles).

Steggert closed the ceremony with his performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
