More HIV Cases Arise Long After China’s Blood Buying Scandal
It has been confirmed that more than 80 patients who received blood transfusions longer than a decade ago at a hospital in central China have just tested HIV positive, Agence France-Presse reports. The cases are allegedly linked to government-backed blood buying programs that led to thousands of Chinese farmers contracting HIV in the 1990s.
According to the article, some people who recently tested positive have since passed the virus to their spouses or children, bringing the total number of people recently infected by the hospital mishap to about 100.
“We can still not determine [how many were infected],” said Xu Chunyang, deputy director of the hospital, which is located in the Hubei province.
In 2001, the government revealed that between 30,000 to 50,000 people might have contracted HIV as a result of the blood-buying scandal.
