With or Without You

by Lucile Scott

As Irish infections rise, where in the world is Bono?

Global AIDS guru Bono may be Ireland’s best known export, but some Irish HIV activists are asking the U2 front man to phone home. “Bono hasn’t done anything in Ireland or for IV-drug users or the gay community,” says Noel Walsh, HIV and Health editor of GCN, Ireland’s oldest gay magazine. “We are trying to get him involved [in domestic prevention] but we don’t know if he will.” With more than 4,000 positive people in a country of 4.25 million, Ireland may not have the world’s highest HIV rate, but infections have nearly tripled since 1999. Perhaps it’s time for Bono to go native—and say “You too.”
