This past fall, ABC’s court drama Boston Legal heralded the condom as “the single most important invention of the past 2,000 years” when attorney Alan Shore (James Spader) represented a teenage girl who became infected with HIV after her school’s abstinence-only curriculum failed to teach the importance of prophylactics. In his closing statements (for a full recap, see abc.com), Shore says: “One-time unprotected sex can kill you. A condom can save you. It is inconceivable that every child in the world isn’t taught that.” The prosecution rests.
