N.Y. Hospitals Warn Thousands About Possible Hep Exposure

Two hospitals in upstate New York are now alerting more than 2,000 patients about their potential exposure to hepatitis and other blood-borne infections, WGRZ reports. Earlier this year, the Buffalo VA Hospital and Olean General Hospital announced that insulin pens might have been mistakenly re-used by staff in both locations between November 2012 and January 2013. Of the 716 veterans possibly exposed at the Buffalo VA Hospital, 12 have tested positive for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and six have tested positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV). Olean General Hospital is emphasizing that there is no documentation of any blood-borne illness at the facility yet, but it is still urging some 1,900 patients to get tested for hepatitis and HIV. Hundreds of people at either hospital have still not been screened.
