Bush Seeks $30 Billion to Fight AIDS
In remarks at Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, Maryland, on Friday, November 30, President Bush urged Congress to approve an additional $30 billion over the next five years to fight HIV/AIDS around the world (boston.com, 12/1).
“We dedicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” Bush said.
He also announced that he would take a trip to Africa early in 2008 to highlight the need for additional funding.
According to President Bush, about 1.4 million HIV-positive people in sub-Saharan Africa are receiving antiretroviral treatment, up from about 50,000 five years ago.
