More Prevention Needed for Cambodian MSM
Casual sex among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Cambodia might be fueling a rise in HIV rates in the country, say experts.
Secrecy surrounding MSM’s risky extramarital relationships threatens efforts to tackle the AIDS epidemic in Asia, say health workers in the country.
"There is a very serious concentrated epidemic among MSM," says Tony Lisle, Cambodia's UNAIDS country coordinator.
Condom and sex education campaigns have helped drop the country’s infection rate in the last 10 years to 0.9 percent, from 3.7 percent in 1997. However, health officials are saying that many of the prevention messages pertain only to heterosexual relationships and that they are still failing to reach many MSM.
