The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts has selected Carl Sciortino as its executive director, according to an AIDS Action statement. A state representative from the 34th Middlesex District, Sciortino will resign from elected office Friday, April 4.

As a gay man living with HIV, Sciortino supported both LGBT and HIV/AIDS issues during nine years in office. Prior to the state legislature, he was a research manager for Fenway Health, which has a strategic partnership with AIDS Action.

Sciortino is the first person with HIV to lead AIDS Action since its founding in 1982. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University.
