A city-funded billboard promoting condom use and HIV testing has caused a stir among teachers and administrators at a Boston Catholic school who claim that the ad’s proximity to the school is in poor taste—and have won a promise from the mayor and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPC) that funded it that the ad will come down before school resumes in the fall.

The ad, which school officials say is fully visible through St. Kevin School’s 5th-8th grade classroom windows, shows two hands holding an unwrapped condom. The text reads, “Are you using? I am. Use a condom. Know your HIV status. Call for a free test.” The ad is part of a $100,000 citywide HIV/AIDS awareness campaign that launched in June.
