Chicago Hospital Offers Free HIV Tests for ER Patients
Advocate Trinity Hospital offers free HIV tests to people waiting to be seen in the emergency room, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Since the unique program began last May, more than 5,000 people have been tested.
Donna Sinclair, HIV coordinator for the hospital’s emergency department, says less than 20 percent of people approached to take the oral HIV test decline. The results are back in 20 minutes, and the test is offered to all patients between ages 14 and 64.
“We don’t wait for the patients to come to us,” Sinclair said. “Instead, our health educators go to each patient awaiting treatment and provide them with a wealth of information, everything from how the virus is spread to who is at risk, to what they need to know about the test.”
