More than 2 Million Children Worldwide Living With HIV
UNICEF, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization released a report April 3 revealing that more than 2 million children under the age of 15 are living with HIV around the world and that an estimated 290,000 children died of AIDS in 2007, Voice of America (VOA) News reports (voanews.com, 4/3).
The report, Children and AIDS, also notes that only about 23 percent of HIV-positive pregnant mothers are receiving antiretroviral medications, drugs that have proven to reduce the risk of mother-to-child infections.
Children and AIDS calls for increased resources for prevention and treatment efforts. It also showcases strides in fighting the virus, highlighting the 70 percent increase in the number of HIV-positive children in low- and middle-income countries receiving HIV medications between 2005 and 2006.
